Are You the Leader We Are Looking for?

There is still time to nominate and apply for the fourth class of the Midcoast Leadership Academy.  Applications are due to the Hutchinson Center on November 30th.  The Class 4 begins January 7, 2011.  Don't miss the opportunity to be part of this successful leadership initiative for Knox and Waldo County residents!

Heather, a graduate of the inaugural class writes, "As a graduate ofthe first class of the Midcoast Leadership Academy, I can't say enough of the tremendous impact it's had on my life and career.  The contacts that I made are individuals that I continue to communicate with regularly and they are those folks whose names you see everywhere you look in the mid-coast area.  Now that I've moved to Southern Maine, I continue to track the progress of the MLA through facebook and the like."

Portland ME – “The courageous men and women portrayed in these photographs have achieved literacy skills and met personal goals through their dedicated work with Literacy Volunteers.  They inspire others with low literacy or limited English-speaking background to accomplish similar life-changing results.”  So affirms Patrick Walsh, coordinator of Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County, about the significance of the FACES OF LITERACY: VOICES OF COURAGE exhibition.

LV Waldo County, in cooperation with the University of Maine Orono Hutchinson Center in Belfast, will host the exhibit September 8 to December 17, 2010 at the Center’s H. Allen & Sally Fernald Art Gallery.  Viewing hours will be weekdays 8:00 am to 9:00 pm Monday through Friday; 8:00 am to 3 pm Saturdays.  The public is invited to attend an opening reception with light refreshments Tuesday, September 14, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm in The Atrium, adjacent to the Gallery.  Individuals interested in LV Waldo’s fall training program to be volunteer tutors are also welcome to drop by the reception.

Belfast. Mr. Charles M. Cawley was the founder of MBNA, the credit card giant that expanded into Maine in 1993, offering good jobs and expanding Maine’s economy in critical regions. At its peak, MBNA employed 5,000 Maine citizens.

Under Mr. Cawley’s leadership, MBNA donated millions of dollars to Maine schools, hospitals and nonprofit institutions. The University of Maine has benefited significantly from MBNA’s generosity, most notably through the partnership that led to the creation of UMaine’s Hutchinson Center in Belfast, but also including several noteworthy donations in support of the arts, library
and student services.
