The undergraduate program prepares students to participate
in an economy that is increasingly global in nature
and reliant on computer-based technology. The
program is designed to develop skills and perspectives
that will enable students to cope successfully with
the emerging problems of business management in the
years ahead.
Graduates of the concentration in management are equipped
with the tools and techniques that will enable them
to assume staff, supervisory, executive, or administrative
positions in business, industry, government, and other
institutions. Students in management follow a
program that is broad in scope and aimed at developing
the student’s grasp of administrative and organizational
principles. Basic subject matter offered includes
administration and organization theory, motivational
and social systems, human resources management, production
systems, and decision and policy-making systems.
This program has three components:
The General Foundation – 60 credits in the Arts
and Sciences
The Business Core – 30 credits of primarily courses
introductory to the major business functional areas.
The Management Concentration - Upper level courses
focusing on specific areas in Management.

Any courses of the student’s choice.
We anticipate that four of the Core classes - BUA
201, BUA 202, BUA 325 and BUA 220 - will be offered
annually. Once a student has completed 201, 202 and
325, other required prerequisites, and has junior standing,
he or she may proceed directly to upper level management
courses. At this point, we envision a three- to three
and a half-year cycle through the required and elective
business courses necessary for completing the undergraduate
degree. Students who wish to accelerate their
progress will have to come to Orono for day time courses.
Business courses at the Hutchinson Center have generally
been taught in a variety of formats, from online to
executive-style, on Friday night and Saturday morning. Some
classes are offered on a weekly schedule following
the University semester calendar.
We always strive to be sure all out students meet
course prerequisites, but in Belfast we are more flexible
than we might be in Orono because students have only
the one choice at a time in most cases. Also,
we try to offer courses with fewer prerequisites.
